God’s Mercies are New Every Morning
There’s something special about the start of a new day. As the light pushes away the darkness, it paints the sky blue with hope.
The book of Lamentations beautifully reminds us of this wonder.
It tells us that God’s love, kindness, faithfulness, and mercies are new every morning.
Every morning, therefore, brings a new chance to see and experience this. Even when storm clouds hide the sunrise, we can trust that the sun is still there.
In the same way, God’s mercy is always with us—morning, noon, and night.
Although the night may feel long, morning always comes. And with it comes hope—hope for a better day and the chance to trust and see God at work in our lives.
It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23
So, how does this happen, and what does it mean for God’s mercies to be new every morning?
“His Mercies are New Every Morning”
These words come from a song I love to sing about God. Even now, as I write, I can hear the tune playing in my mind.
The lyrics, drawn straight from Scripture, make the song even more meaningful.
To me, these are some of the most comforting and encouraging words in the Bible.
God’s love and mercy never run out. Instead, they are refreshed and made new every single morning.
And truly, what could offer greater hope than this?
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases”
According to the English Dictionary, steadfast means fixed or unchanging—firmly loyal or constant, and unswerving.
This definition perfectly captures God’s love for you and me. His love is solid, unshakable, and unchanging.
What’s even more incredible is that His love is not up for debate. There is no chance that God will ever reconsider His decision to love you.
His love is final, and nothing can alter that truth.
God has never, and will never, have a single thought or reason to stop loving you.
Because His steadfast love will never end, everything else in life ties back to this unchanging foundation.
“His mercies never come to an end”
When you understand the first part of this scripture, the next statement becomes clear: God’s mercy flows directly from His love.
Since God’s love is unchanging and endless, His mercy shares the same nature.
This is only possible because His love for you is firm, unshakable, and constant.
Consider it this way: God’s mercy towards you: Never loses its strength. Does not fail. Always works on your behalf. Never grows weary. Cannot be destroyed.
Because God is eternal, His mercy—rooted in His unchanging love for you—is also eternal.
“They are new every morning”
The real question is, how are God’s mercies new every morning?
We know that His mercy flows from His love, and because His love is eternal, His mercy is eternal too. The two are deeply connected.
This truth serves as a powerful reminder: God provides mercy for each day, and it is renewed and replenished every morning.
It’s not just about the availability of His mercy; it’s also about our access to it.
No matter how often you depend on God’s mercy—and for me, it’s every single day—you can always return for more.
However, this doesn’t give us a free pass to test God by living in sin and then asking for His mercy.
If that’s your mindset, this promise doesn’t apply to you.
But if your heart is set on following God and striving to obey Him, even when you fall short, this verse is meant for you.
Every day, there is fresh mercy to meet your needs and address your challenges.
“Great is thy faithfulness”
This final thought brings everything together: God’s unchanging love pours into a mercy that never ends, and this mercy is always accessible.
The reason we can rely on it is because of God’s faithfulness.
A promise is only as good as the one who makes it, and God’s promises are unshakable because His word holds the highest value to Him.
Psalm 138:2 reminds us that God honors His word above His name. It is His faithfulness to His word that ensures He remains true to His promises.
I bow before your holy Temple as I worship. I will give thanks to your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness, because your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.
Psalms 138:2
If I had to sum up this beautiful truth about God’s mercies being new every morning, the only fitting word would be:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ends; His mercies never fail. They are new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness.” Amen!
