The Fresh Start Effect

The Fresh Start Effect

As we step into a new year, it’s a time when many of us think about things we want to do better.

This might involve letting go of a peculiar habit, overcoming procrastination to embark on a new career path or job.

We might aim to read more books, save for a new apartment, enter into a relationship, learn a new skill, or even lose weight.

Whatever the resolution may be, we’ve all, at some point, pledged to initiate change at the start of a new year, month, or on our birthdays, showing a desire to grow.

Psychologists call this the “Fresh Start Effect.” It’s like a boost that makes us set big goals when a new period begins.

The new year isn’t just a change in the calendar; it’s a chance to separate from our past selves and enables us to mentally reset, leaving behind failures, regrets, and mistakes.

For millions of Believers worldwide, the start of the year isn’t just about physical health, career goals, or personal development.

It’s an opportunity to reflect, refocus, and reconnect with our spiritual journey, seeking personal growth and a closer relationship with God.

But deciding to make changes by ourselves might not be enough.

Our faith in Christ Jesus speaks powerfully to these longings we have and offers a vision of what our best selves can be.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Colossians 3:12

The changes we desire to make won’t happen significantly through vows or our decisions alone but through the divine power of God at work in our lives.

God’s spirit works inside us, making us better. So, it’s not just about what we decide and do but also about God working in us for the real transformation we want.

The beginning of a new year always produces in us the natural tendency to want positive changes.

Whether they’re normal plans or spiritual hopes, the goal is the same – to grow and improve.

While we may desire that we do these things as planned, sometimes we need to give up our plans and follow what Christ wants for us.

That’s because a fresh start with Jesus is the best change!

Happy new year!
